Rotary Caravan 2009 - My viewpoint |
|
District Governor Jesus “Jess” Nicdao said in his speech: “It was meant to be the biggest PR Campaign of the District in order to increase awareness about Rotary and all the good works it has been doing for mankind. We started on January 16, 2009 with two (2) groups: Group 1 starting in Balanga passing thru Pampanga, Tarlac, Eastern Pangasinan, Baguio and La Union. Group 2 starting in Subic Freeport to Zambales, Western Pangasinan and La Union. Along the routes, we inaugurated Rotary Markers, 4-Way Test Signages in Tarlac and Sual and joined Cluster 1-C in the biggest medical mission funded by Rotary and the Baguio Centennial Commission. In Marcos highway in Pugo, La Union, we inaugurated the 30-ft. Rotary Wheel amidst the smiles of every Rotarian present in that event.”

Bill Gates made honorary member of Seattle ROTARY club |
|
William Gates Sr., helps fasten a Rotary pin to his son's lapel during the Rotary Club of Seattle's centennial celebration. The club made the younger Gates an honorary member, joining his dad, who is already an honorary member. Bill Gates, cochair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was made an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Seattle during the club's centennial celebration 5 March.
More than 1,000 Rotarians and community leaders attended the event, held at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, to pay tribute to the club's 100 years of service. Gates, Microsoft cofounder and chair, delivered the keynote address.

Tectonics, Tsunamis and Appetites |
|
Pangaea was an ancient super-continent that once incorporated all the Earth’s major landmasses. It is thought to have begun splitting up about 200 million years ago resulting in the major continents with which we are familiar today. The tectonic plates upon which they rest continuously shift, rending them apart and, in some cases, have pushed previously unassociated masses together. They are not stable and unceasingly move. If one examines the globe, carefully comparing the coastal outlines of individual continents, one can discern how they once fit together many millennia ago.

Have you ever been chased by a rhinoceros? Even in such an unlikely possibility, it's not a race you would likely have won. An adult rhino can weigh up to 5000 pounds, and can run as fast as 30 or 40 miles per hour. The last thing you would want aimed at you is his pointed 18-inch horn, with all that weight and speed behind it. It's an example, however, of the rhino's capability, once he is motivated to attack.
Rotarians in many clubs use a similar word but with slightly different spelling. The term RINO is the acronym for Rotarian In Name Only, someone whose name is on the club roll but whose attendance and participation are minimal. Many clubs have challenged their members with the rhetorical question, "Are you a member of Rotary [a RINO], or are you a Rotarian [a rhino]?" Unfortunately, many clubs have some members who come for the meal, talk to a few people, and leave without becoming truly involved in the work of Rotary. In most clubs, there are at least some RINOS.

Investment under recession |
|
As the effects of the global financial crisis become more pronounced, experts predict that the Philippine economy will fare from bad to worse, just like the country’s major trading partners in other parts of the world which have fell into recession.
It is not hard to imagine that most companies around the world are operating at a minimal profit or, more likely, at a loss. If you are an investor, then you must know that the reduction in value of your investments is not a matter of question anymore. By now, you might be compelled to wish that this recession, which pushes down your investment’s value, is just a bad dream.

Acquiring or reorganizing? Conduct tax due diligence first. |
|
People familiar with the securities markets say that the best time to buy is when the market is down. Thus, for those companies that are flush with cash, now is a great time to make an acquisition.
The current economic downturn is an opportune time to evaluate closely one’s business to identify potential areas for growth, and separate those that are not aligned with one’s core businesses. Options like mergers, spin-offs or asset sales may be considered.
Buyers and sellers of businesses, or other parties in these types of transactions, are typically focused on getting the deal done and reaping the relative economic benefits of such transactions.

Finn Munk - ROTIan of the Month |
|
During my 20 years in Rotary I have been able to obey one of my own rules: If you are asked by Club or District to take over a task or fill out a position in Board or Committees, the answer should be YES !
So I have held almost all positions of my clubs, and been on the District Board for quite some years in different positions too
That means on the other side, that there has not been time for other hobbies, except for just a little Golf, and playing a couple of hours on my old organ and keyboards, both really good ways of relaxing.
